Blackberry: A roundabout way towards concentration
About two months ago I finally gave up my old, antiquated cell phone and purchased a blackberry. It has taught me a tremendous amount about concentration and the difficulties I sometimes have with that skill.
Although the blackberry is extremely useful when I travel—no more searching for wifi internet—I found myself obsessively looking at the phone to see if the red light was blinking (meaning I have a message) while I was practicing, cooking, or even talking to my partner. I was not expecting anything important, it was just a constant need to see if someone was interested in contacting me. Sound pathetic? Apparently a lot of us are in the same situation; I can’t tell you how many times someone has almost walked into me because they were checking e-mail or texting while walking. Now I am one with them.
Classical music takes tremendous concentration and focus on many levels. Anyone who has seriously played an instrument knows the tremendous physical demands required by a musician. And becoming comfortable with that is only the beginning: the collaboration with legendary figures like Beethoven and Mozart take us to an emotional and mental depth that can never fully be reached. Focusing on the little red light, with the hopes that there might be a text saying “Hi”, is a complete avoidance of those depths.
So now when I practice I turn the phone off. Ironically, the result of getting a phone that can do almost anything is going to result in a lot less—but hopefully more meaningful—communication.
